during the Mexican war
The Whig party was the base of the North but were close to splitting in 1852 and many of the them jumped to the new Republican party in the next election because their desire to abolish slavery. Their founders Daniel Webster and John Quincy Adams had recently died. The decision to include support of the Compromise of 1850 with its fugitive slave provision in the parties platform for 1852 meant that Northern Whigs did not work very hard to elect their candidate Scott, unlike the Democrats who already in the majority who were solidly behind their candidate, Pierce. Moreover, Pierce for the independent voter had much going for him - he was young, nice looking, had experience in the both houses of the US Congress as well as the NH legislature. His father had been a two-term governor and Pierce served as a general in the Mexican War. Pierce was a successful lawyer and had been offered the position of attorney-general of the US by President Polk. Scott was 66 years old and had never held elected office, he did not have a college degree- his only credential was his military success.

Pierce earned his living as a lawyer when was not serving in government or in the army. He served in the state legislature including two years as speaker, two terms as a US Congressman and a US senator, serving only five years, resigning due to the health of his wife and a need to make more money. He also served in Mexican War, rising to the rank of brigadier general.
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of autobiography ever written.
He did not have any partners.
yes he did don't know what years.
He went home to Concord , New Hampshire, and resumed his law practice to some extent.
Franklin Pierce had a relatively easy life up until he was elected president although he had lost two children. After that things got hard. He last son died, his wife cracked up , his plans as president did not work out well . He left office and took a position that branded as a Southern supporter. His wife died and he took to drink.
Pierce was admitted to the bar in 1827 and practiced law until he became President in 1953. He took off two years to fight in the Mexican War. He also served 9 years in Congress, but he could do some legal work during that period,
It was a leisure time activity, something to when he did have to work. I do not think he ever explained why he liked it, I would guess that he liked being in the outdoors and the challenge and thrill of catching fish.
Pierce had periods when he drank enough to injure his health. He was never unable to do his work due to intoxication. I do not think there was even an instances when he appeared drunk in public and his drinking did not seriously threaten his marriage if at all.

Franklin Pierce was an unpopular president. He was not known for his contributions, but for his failures such as backing the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska act and failing to use federal troops there when violence broke out. He made an effort to acquire Cuba from Spain, a diplomatic fiasco occurred over his administration's efforts. His main contributions, which he is not known for, were the Gadsden Purchase and the fine work by his secretaries of the navy and war to improve and modernize the navy and army.
