The Catholic Church instituted the process of canonization long after the time of Saint James. A saint is any person in heaven, whether or not formally recognized or canonized. Saint James the Greater was an Apostle of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the early Church widely regarded him among the earliest saints. Acts 12:2 recalls his martyrdom.

Saint James was not formally canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church, as he lived in the early days of Christianity. He is traditionally venerated as a saint based on his apostolic role and martyrdom.

St James son of Zebedee - incorrectly called the Greater, (the apostles haven't attached this appellation; James son of Zebedee or Theuda was born circa A.D.1, as sourced in James' Apocalypse, so the appellation 'greater', in terms of age to James the Less is incorrect) - is recorded as being martyred in A.D. 62 in most historian's estimations, though these are overridden when accounts record his death as taking place immediately before the siege of Jerusalem in April, A.D. 70.

Suppositions that Acts 12:2 - 'And he slew by sword James , the brother of John' is applied to James son of Zebedee are annulled by the accounts within the various Assumption of the Virgin Gospels - 'attested by the Twelve and the Seventy-Two and written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.'

With the bishop of Jerusalem being determined as James son of Zebedee within those gospels, they make records insuperable that his death is placed at A.D. 70, or by the overridden estimation of most historians at A.D. 62.

Ref: James' Apocalypse; the account of Josephus; and the account of Hegesippus; Assumption Gospels, History of the Virgin Mary Gospels.

Traditionally James the Less (Mark 15:40), son of Alphaeus, was martyred in Jerusalem and died circa 62 AD.

Tradition goes that James was first pushed off of the highest point of a temple by priests. But he only broke his legs. But after he broke his legs he got on his knees and prayed for the people persecuting him. The priests were fixing to stone him but one of the priests saw him praying for them and begged he other priests to stop the stoning. The priests were still angry with him and threw him in a fire. The fire was not hurting him, so the priests through spears in at him which finally killed him.

St. James was declared a saint before the official canonization process was instituted in the 12th century. He would have been declared a saint to the bishop by those who knew him best and were familiar with his life and merits. The local bishop would them make the decision. At the time, anyone dying a martyr's death was automatically considered saint.

Today only the pope can declare saints after years of study by the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints in the Vatican. The church does not create saints. Only God can do that. The Church "screens" candidates for sainthood to determine if they had a life worthy of emmulation. In other words, do they make good role models. Also, the Church has to be assured that the person is actually in Heaven. That is the reason that today a number of miracles must be verified before a person can be declared a saint.

St. James (either James Major or James Minor) was not canonized. He was proclaimed a saint by early Christians because of his martyrdom. The modern canonization process did not come into existence until the 12th century. In the primitive Church, martyrs were immediately recognized as witnessing to the perfection of Christian life on earth, having shown the ultimate proof of their love for Christ by the offering of their lives. By the sacrifice of their lives for Christ, they attained Heaven in eternal glory and were indissolubly united to the Lord, the Head of the Mystical Body.

St. James the Greater was stabbed with a sword by King Herod Agrippa I in 44 at Jerusalem.

Acts 12:1-2

"About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword,"

Herod died a short time after he killed James in the year 44.
