I personally started performing in my fathers circus at the age of ten years assisting the professional engaged clowns in a small way to start and then doing a little more as time passed.
When I was about eleven years I could perform a good routine on the trampoline and really enjoyed doing this, again dressed as a clown doing comic falls and tumbles.
Later, when about fifteen years, I was introduced to riding a horse but never liked doing this and my riding days lasted just one year only.
Most circus children start at a young age - doing something - but a lot are not necessarily gifted to perform and drop out quite soon. Other persons who may be from outside of circus (parentage) may be great performers and come later to it. They may come from gymnastic backgrounds. But, it is getting a bit late after the age of fifteen years to be of world class.
I think children should be introduced slowly and work to their own pace with no shame if they do not want to be a performer (it is not the be all and and all of everything! A circus requires many skills)
