Eunice Kennedy was a woman who helped people with mental retardation to lead into a new life as an athlete. She got this idea before she was able to try it out since her sister, Rosemary, was a person with mental retardation too. She first set up Camp Shriver in her own backyard with her husband. This camp contained 100 handicapped people and 100 volunteers, one for each of the campers. When this camp turned out to be a success she decided to stretch her goal and dream a little bit farther; she wanted to make a Special Olympics just for handicapped people. This became to a big success, since thousands of physically and mentally challenged persons could be acknowledged as athletes on par with those of Olympic athletes. Eunice Kennedy Shriver predicted a day when lots of athletes could come to dream big, being famous, and be treated just like other people.
