A section of the Bay Bridge collapsed during the earthquake that shook northern California at 5:04pm on October 17, 1989. The earthquake hit during the "Battle of the Bay," a rare World Series game between the neighboring San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's.
The bridge section that collapsed was on the west-bound top level, but because it fell onto the bottom (east-bound) level, many baseball fans and commuters were stuck in San Francisco that night. The Bay Bridge was closed for a month of repairs, after which it reopened with one section of cleaner, brighter pavement. The 1989 San Francisco earthquake measured from 6.9 to 7.1 on the Richter scale.

∙ 13y agoThere have actually been two failures of the Bay Bridge, although one is much more famous than the other. That one occurred on October 17, 1989, during the "Bay Bridge Series" between the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants, and was a result of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. The second failure was on October 27, 2009 when a steel crossbeam fell onto the upper deck.
