The "performance" button does not give more power, nor does it make you accelerate faster. The performance button only changes the shift patterns of the automatic transmission. When in performance mode, the transmission shifts a little later, when the engine is running at a higher RPM. It's best to use the performance button when you have several people in the vehicle or are otherwise carrying a heavy load.
Any Saturn Automatic transmission from 1994-2002 with the stamp of MP6 in the top of the bell housing will work in your 1994 SL1. Do not use transmissions from 1991-1993 because they do not have the casting in the top of the case for the transmission torque strut mount.
