The cost of living is a bit more expensive than many places because it's a major tourist destination, and most of what sustains Maui must be delivered by boat or plane. So in turn that extra cost is added into the cost of everyday things. Most of the jobs on Maui are directly related to tourist activities, in hotels, condos, timeshares, fishing, boating, and travel. Unfortunately, the ratio of pay scale to cost of living isn't all that great. However, many people decide the simple pleasures in life, such as swimming daily in a warm ocean, never needing to wear a jacket, and feeling relatively safe in a small, rural population are worth the trade.

The best time to plan a move would be during September or October. These months are typically the least expensive to travel. Many restaurants offer 50% specials during this time. The housing market always shifts, so there isn't a better time to look for a rental or property to purchase.

Aloha: Everyday is a good day to move to Maui. Cheapest... not here. HI is expensive in many ways, but liveable also. Of course, pay is equitable, but comparable to everywhere else in the US (meaning that the economy fluctuates and supports its unique and individual communities).

The best city is questionable. Everyone thinks that where they live is the best. I live in Kihei; too touristy sometines, but it's still Maui.
