∙ 16y agoDepends on where you live. If you only fertilize once, do it late in the fall, just before it snows, if you live where it snows. As the grass stops growing 'up' at the end of the season, it continues to grow roots and take in nutrients. These nutrients will be stored up over the winter. If you want to fertilize more evenly, which is recommended, try this. One pound of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft of lawn - 4 times a year. If you mow regularly and don't pick up your clippings, you can eliminate 1 fertilization. On a bag of fertilizer, the 1st # in the mix is nitrogen, and it shows the % of nitrogen in the bag. (Usually 20 or so) This means 20% of the bag is nitrogen. So if you have a 20 lb bag of fert. and the ratio is 20-10-10, you'll have 4 lbs of nitrogen in each bag. Each bag would cover 4000 sq ft of lawn, because you want 1 lb per 1000 sq ft of lawn. See? Try and find a fertilizer that lists the amount of WATER INSOLUBLE nitrogen as around 5%. This may also be called sulfur coated urea. It makes it last longer.

Does scotts turf-guard fertilizer with crabgrass killer kill Bermuda grass?
There is nothing in Scotts Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer that will harm Bermuda Grass. You will want to wait to apply the product though until the lawn is out of winter dormancy. If you apply the Scotts Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer before the lawn is out of winter dormancy then it could cause some damage to the grass. If your lawn is still dormant, but you want to apply crabgrass preventer now, Scotts does sell Halts without the fertilizer in it.
