When did Constantine name Constantinople?

Constantinople was originally a town called Byzantium. It was founded at some time around 665 BC. When Emperor Constantine I became Emperor, he decided the city of Rome had too many problems to be the capital of the Empire, so he built Byzantium into a new capital. It was consecrated as the capital of the Roman Empire in 330, on May 11.

Constantine the Great did not name the city, however people called it Constantinople in his honour. The city has been named various things throughout history though Constantinople is one of its earliest ones and was probably around since the city's construction (c.324-330 CE). The name itself is of Greek origin - which is befitting because the town had been known as "Byzantium" before then which had been established by the Ancient Greeks around c.600 BCE. The name literally means Constantine's Polis (or 'city'). Occasionally it is referred to as the 'New Rome', or as someone previously mentioned here 'Nova Roma'. However Constantine himself never referred to it by this name, though he may well have perceived this to be true privately. The first mention of this comparison was during the second ecumenical council (the first to be held in Constantinople) in 381 when the city was referred to as 'The New Rome' - probably as a result of the swift expansion and growth of the city.

Constantine the great did rename the city, which was previously called Byzantium (a latinisation of the original Greek name Byzantion). There is controversy among some historians about whether it was renamed New Rome or whether it was called Constantinople from the beginning. The latter historians say that New Rome was one of various honorific titles the city was given (such as Rome Constantiniana, the second new Rome, the Eastern Rome, and Alma Roma) and that Constantinople was the new name of the city all along.
