The Simpson Desert in Australia was discovered by Captain Charles Sturt in 1844. Captain Charles Sturt led an expedition into the desert interior, together with Scottish explorer John MacDougall Stuart. Sturt hoped to find the inland sea which had eluded him since he first followed the Murray River in the late 1820s. All the explorers found was Sturt's Stony Desert and the Simpson Desert.

There are also numerous oil exploration leases within the dunefields.

Since the desert covers all of Northern Africa, Some countries have created parks to get tourists to come. these parks are; Banc d'Arguin National Park in Mauritania, Djanet-National Park in Algeria, Sidi Touri National Park in Tunisia, Taghit National Park in Algeria and finally the Ain Khadra National Park in Egypt. The problem though these "parks" are not like the parks in North America, they are actually oasises located within the desert and these countries.
