The first atomic bomb used on Japan in World War 2 was exploded on August 6, 1945 over Hiroshima, at approximately 8:15 AM local time. It was a so-called "gun-type" uranium fission bomb called "Little Boy" with an equivalent explosive yield of about 15 kilotons of TNT, enough to obliterate much of the city and spark a massive firestorm.
A second bomb was dropped on August 9, on the city of Nagasaki. This was a plutonium bomb called "Fat Man" and did less damage with its yield of 21 kilotons, because surrounding hills shielded some areas of the city. As Nagasaki was a secondary target and mostly obscured by clouds, the bomb missed its aiming point by about two miles.
Hiroshima became the first city in history assaulted by nuclear armament when the United States of America dropped an atomic bomb on it on August 6, 1945.
