It evolved out of trick Photography and movie- stop-motion work as applied- and the normal 2-minute running pace was ideal for manual movie cameras-horse Racing. The cartoonist Max Fleischer- nicknamed (grim) for his serious, as opposed to comedic approach to his art developed the rotoscope circa l9l4 the device was a mechanical drawing machine used to make sketches into motion Cartoons, it was adapted from similar devices used to make maps. back in the early fifties a prominent mail order house offered the Rotascope as a hobby item. I have never seen one, perhaps they did not sell well, or violated copyright laws, still a crafty skill combining photography and art, why not.

In the twenties. It was a natural outgrowth of motion simulation of such things as dolls and puppets, which however had depth of field, unlike flat cartoons. an early stop-motion animation was Squiffy the Skunk, adapted to a sort of juvenile comic book level. as to the animated cartoons- the first in the movie houses ( TV not then extant) was in the mid-twenties with Felix the Cat. as sound came in in l927 ( By Warner Brothers) Warner Cartoons followed suit- Bugs Bunny having made the scene in that year. The earliest Mickey Mouse- the Disney character, did not come out until l928, not to deride their popularity.

The modern version of the Zoetrope was the Phenakiscope invented in 1841.
