I am not sure exactly when Egypt split into upper and lower, but I do know why it split. Egypt was turned into upper and lower because of the Nile river. The Nile river flowed upwards toward the Mediterranean Sea so the beginning of the river is called lower Egypt, and the part near the the Nile delta is upper Egypt.
They were originally separate but were united by the first pharaoh in circa 3100 BC. The first pharaoh may be Narmer (aka Menes) . Another virtually unknown pharaoh who is a candidate for first is 'Scorpion' .(See the Scorpion Macehead ,and the Narmer Palette).
In dynasties 7-10, another split ocurred .(2181-2040 BC).
It was unified around 3100 B.C. by Menes (Narmer)
the king of Upper Egypt wanted to be more powerful.

Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt
He united the separate Upper and Lower Kingdoms.
The crowns of upper and lower Egypt were combined because King Menes combinded upper and lower Egypt. He decidd to combine upper and lower Egypt and the crowns.
He lived some where in lower Egypt. But lower Egypt is upper Egypt because upper is lower and lower is upper.
Lower Egypt is the top and to the north, Upper Egypt is the bottom and to the south.
Lower Egypt; it is in the north, while Upper Egypt is in the south.
The two regions of Egypt are called Upper and Lower Egypt! I hope I helped
Although Upper Egypt is actually the southern part of Egypt on a compass, it is called Upper Egypt because its elevation is higher than Lower Egypt which is the northern part of Egypt on a compass but has lower elevation and is therefore is called Lower Egypt.
Upper Egypt is up river from lower Egypt.
Lower Egypt.
