Mountains are formed wherever two tectonic plates meet head-on. This forces one of the plates to go under the other, which results in some of the land being uplifted (forced upward). The Himalayas, home of Mount Everest, are a young mountain chain that is still being forced upward today.
Mountains can also be formed from volcanoes; as the ash and lava builds up, it creates what's known as a cinder cone.
