The tonsils form a broken ring under the mucous membranes in the mouth and back of the throat and they are called the pharyngeal lymphoid ring. This ring includes the palatine tonsils, located on each side of throat, the pharyngeal tonsils, located near posterior opening of nasal cavity and the lingual tonsils, located near base of the tongue.
They protect against bacteria that may invade tissues around the openings between the nasal and oral cavities.
