From the manufacturer or a dealer would be the best place to get them from. Most trucks use a system where the brakes on the drive axles are metred from the primary air system, and the trailer brakes are when the foot valve is used, and the secondary air will metre the steer axle brakes via the foot valve and the trailer brakes when the Johnson bar is used. Although this isn't always the case. For example, some trucks (this is more common in older trucks) will metre the air to the steer axle brakes directly from the treadle (foot) valve. But all trucks manufactured after 1976 are required to have a FMVSS 121-compliant dual circuit application system.
A retarded is either an engine compression brake, and exhaust compression brake, or a system which combines the two.
Depends on what type of tractor and trailer you had in mind. For a farm tractor pulling a trailer, it's usually a pintle on the tractor which is run through a clevice on the trailer. For road going vehicles, the fifth wheel trailers are often used, where a trailer kingpin will be inserted and locked into a fifth wheel on the vehicle. In the case of an 18 wheeler, air lines will connect from the tractor to the trailer to operate the trailer's air brake system.
A typical tandem axle tractor has 6 brake chambers.
It is the metal connector at the end of the hoses that supply air to the trailer brakes from the tractor.
You brake normally. The ABS system actually makes the brakes much more forgiving if you get on the brake pedal with more force than you should have.
If you have a Class A permit, and there IS NOT a restriction on it prohibiting you from driving tractor-trailers or air brake equipped vehicles, you can drive one, but you must have a fully licenced driver with you at all times.
Most auto parts stores carry a brake system diagram for a 1969 Corvette. Repair manuals often have the diagrams and are available at auto parts and book stores.
It's a dual circuit air brake system. Most use S-cam foundation brakes, although some use disc brakes or piston brakes.

protection valve maintains air in the tractor brake system in the event of the trailer air lines becoming compromised.for example, if a trailer line is leaking, broken or disconnected
They're not just on tractor-trailers - you'll find them on most air brake equipped vehicles. Spring brakes can be described as parking brakes. That's the simple answer. They are brakes which are held down by a spring. When air pressure is introduced into the system, via the service air system, the air pushes against those brakes, forcing the spring to compress, and releasing the brakes. The air pressure must remain constant in order for the spring brakes to remain released.
