Ms. Earhart and Frederick Noonan, her navigator, disappeared after leaving New Guinea for Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean, while attempting to circle the globe. It is not known for sure that they crashed, but it is presumed they went down near Howland Island due to extremely poor visibility - that is, they probably were unable to find the island and could possibly have run out of fuel in the search. In any case, no trace of them or the airplane was ever found.
