The general consensus is that the name was derived from the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. As a result of expeditions in 1502 and 1504, both of which were well known in Europe, Martin Waldseemuller produced a world map on which he named the 'new' continent America. The name came from the female Latin version of Vespucci's christian name, which is Americus.
The most generally accepted explanation is that the entire continent of America (comprising both North and South America) is named after the Italian explorer, Amerigo Vespucci. He was the first to propose the idea that the New World was in fact a continent in and of itself, and thus when this was confirmed, it was named after him in his honor.
Vespucci's name is itself derived from Prince Emeric of Hungary, who was posthumously granted sainthood.
The name for the country America, a popular shortening of the United States of America, is derived from the fact that the numerous individual colonies that achieved independence from Great Britain came together to share a federalized government while also maintaining their own state governments. Thus, they are "united" as recognized states that willingly give up some sovereignty to a central government.
