If someone was extremly poor or in debt they would sell themselves and their families into slavery until the debt was paid.

if someone did something wrong, as a sentence they would make them slaves. A typical sentence was to be sent to the gold mines. This was like a death sentence because few people survived the harsh conditions.

Prisoners of war were also put to work as slaves building the temples and monuments, making bricks, working in the fields and quarries

Jacob had twelve sons, who became the twelve heads of the nation of Israel.

Joseph was one of these sons, but was sold to Midianite traders by his jealous brothers (Genesis 37:23-24)(Genesis 37:28, 31-35)and ended up in Egypt, as a slave to an Egyptian court official, Potiphar, the chief of Pharaoh's bodyguard. (Genesis 37:36)(Genesis 39:4) Joseph did such a good job that Potiphar eventually put him in charge of his entire estate (Genesis 39:1-6), until Potiiphar's wife had him sent to prison on false charges(Genesis 39:7-20).

Joseph continued to show his kind moral character in prison, and gained the trust of those connected with him there(Genesis 39:21-23). He used God's power to help other officials who'd been thrown in prison as well(Genesis 40:1-41:13), and because of this, he was eventually released to assist Pharoah himself (Genesis 41:14-36). As a reward for his help and good character, Pharoah set Joseph up over all Egypt, to supervise all activity (Genesis 41:37-49).

When famine hit the land, Jacob sent his remaining sons (Joseph's brothers) to Egypt to seek food. When Joseph saw his brothers he recognized them, but they did not recognize him. After testing them to see if they'd changed their ways, and teaching them a valuable lesson(Genesis 41:50-44:34), the family was reuinted, apologies were extended, forgiveness was given,(Genesis 45:1-15) and Pharoah invited Joseph's entire family to move to Egypt under his protection(Genesis 45:16-46:7), which they did(Genesis 46:31-47:28).

Years later, after Joseph, Pharoah and that whole generation was dead(Genesis 50:24-26), the Isrealite descendants were still in Egypt, and multiplying fast.(Exodus 1:6-7)

The NEW Pharoah did not appreciate this and viewed their great number as a threat, so made them slaves to keep them "in line"(Exodus 1:8-22) until the day that God brought them OUT Of Egypt by Moses, as promised(Exodus 3:6-17)

This was how Egypt originally 'acquired' Israelite slaves.
