The Rothschilds are Jews, and the origin of most Jews, of course, was in the Middle East several thousand years ago. However, they were forced out of their homes there around 2,000 years ago and gradually spread across the rest of the world, with the greatest concentration in Europe.

The first one in the family to use the name "Rothschild"was Isaac Elchanan Rothschild, who was born in Germany in 1577 (the name means "Red Shield" in German). The founder of the banking dynasty was Mayer Amschel Rothschild, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1744. Mayer's five sons, also born in Frankfurt, established branches of the bank in other major financial capitals of the Europe.
