Western rising saddles were developed from Spanish saddles brought to south America. The saddles found their way into Mexico where the cowboys there began changing them to suit their needs and eventually found it's way into North America.

What are saddle pads called?
A numnah, or saddle pad. The saddle pad is a square, and the numnah is the shape of the saddle, generally. In North America, usually you will only hear the term saddle pad. Comes in all shapes (for some dressage saddles, "swallowtail", square, fitted) and thicknesses (a "baby" pad is a thinner variety"). Also, many English riders use half pads that are half the size of a saddle pad and are meant to fit under the saddle but on top of the saddle pad (some people use them alone). These come in memory foam, sheepskin, or various synthetics.

Cowboys needed a saddle that was comfortable to sit in and work in because they're sitting in that saddle from dawn til dusk. They also needed a saddle that they could rope and herd cattle in, as well as something that was comfortable (relatively speaking) for the horse to wear on his back all day.

The best way to ride a horse is to evaluate what that particular horse is built and bred for. The ability of the rider is also important. A bad rider can injure a horse more than what seat a rider uses. Also, considering what sport you are in may help you to determine which saddle you prefer to use. Obviously if you are a jumper you would be better in an English saddle, and if you are a barrel racer, you would most likely use a western saddle.
Is an endurance saddle a type of western saddle?
Contrary to another site out there, an endurance saddle came about when long distance trail riders "cut the horn off" of their western saddles. The AERC (American Endurance Riders Conference) was formed in 1972 but the modern day founding ride was the Western States Trail Ride, better known at "Tevis", which first began in 1954 on a dare. The dare was that modern horses were as good as horses from the 1800's. So the bet was on that the horses could ride 100 miles in one day. One rider one horse. The evolution of the saddle has come about largely due to the time spent in the saddle. This has huge impact on the horse and the rider. The reason the horn was cut off was while out on wild and wooley trails, when you duck low branches, you would impale yourself on the horn. Since the horn is there to use on the ranch for roping, endurance riders had no need for that horn. Because there is no regulation as to the type or style of saddle or other tack for that matter, anything goes. Even nothing. I have seen horse/riders compete bareback, with just a neck rope and everything in between. Some riders come from a more diciplined background, so they often prefer an English style saddle. It was also much lighter than a traditional western saddle. Some didn't want to give up the security of the western saddle, so the endurance saddle came about by lightening the load.
