Chinese Gooseberries are native to north-central and eastern China are more commonly known as Kiwifruit. Note: Some people may know of them as "kiwis", this is the name for one of New Zealands native birds, and the nickname for New Zealanders. It is not the correct name for the fruit.

The Chinese gooseberry is native to northeast Asia, and most particularly to south China. In fact, it's the national fruit of the People's Republic of China. In China, its original name is 'yáng táo' ['sunny peach'] and 'Mihou tao' ['Macaque peach'].

But it may be known best as the kiwifruit. That's the name by which it's known among New Zealand fruit exporters and their clients. It's called Chinese, out of respect to the fruit's origins. But it isn't called gooseberry, because of any relationship to gooseberries [of the Grossulariaceaefamily]. Instead, the Chinese gooseberry, or kiwifruit, is in the Actinidiaceae family.
