With obstruction of the lymphatic system, lymph will be unable to return to the systemic circulation (ie - the blood). Instead, this lymph builds up in the tissues causing swelling that can become extreme. Elephantiasis occurs when a microorganism causes obstruction of the lymphatics and results in grossly swollen appendages.
Waste products that are not removed build up and act as poisons in body cells. Water that is normally removed from body tissues accumulates and causes swelling of the ankles and feet, and sometimes these fluids also build up around the heart, and so it has to work harder to move blood around the body.
An ear infection can cause minimal swelling to moderate swelling around the ear, and can also cause hearing loss that can become permanent.
It will depend upon the cause of swelling. If it is due to post operative clot in the veins -DVT, treatment will require elevation, compression stockings and anticoagulant therapy. If the swelling is due to cancer surgery with removal of the lymph nodes for clearance, and if patient has had radiotherapy, it causes damage to the lymphatic system and treatment will be elevation of legs, compression stockings. In both cases there may be residual permanent swelling in the leg.
