The word comes from Judaism. During mass reconciliation the rabbi would bring a goat to the alter. The sins of the people would be absorbed into the goat, and it would then be killed, its' blood staining the alter until cleansed. This is what Jesus Christ reflected in his crucifixion, being a scapegoat.
Coined by Tyndale in 1530, the word carries the meaning of the 'goat sent into the wilderness on the Day of Atonement as the symbolic bearer of the sins of the people', scapegoatgoes all the way back to the Book of Leviticus.
However, as the meaning of 'one who is blamed or punished for the mistakes or sins of others' is from 1824.
