Congo red is the sodium salt of benzidinediazo-bis-1-naphtylamine-4-sulfonic acid (formula: C 32 H 22 N 6 Na 2 O 6 S 2 ). It is a secondary diazo dye. Congo red is water soluble, yielding a red colloidal solution; its solubility is better in organic solvents such as ethanol. It has a strong, thou…gh apparently non-covalent affinity to cellulose fibres. However, the use of Congo red in the cellulose industries (cotton textile, wood pulp & paper) has long been abandoned, mainly because of its toxicity. Conga Red is an acidic stain primarily used to stain bacterial cells to test for capsules . The Conga Red stain is used to stain a microscope slide background against the colorless cell. Then a basic stain like Maneval's Stain is used to stain the cell. The capsule surrounding some cells will repel the stains and appear colorless against a red (Conga Red) background. The cell inside the capsule will be stained light purple from the Maneval's Stain. (MORE)

There are currently two countries named after the river: The Democratic Republic of the Congo Human habitation here can be tra…ced back to Neolithic times and the first European settlers appeared around 1870. From 1877 the country was a colony of Belgium - in fact a personal posession of King Leopold II - and was called The African Congo Free State until 1908 when international pressure led to it becoming a colony of Belgium rather than a possession of the king. This pressure arose from the appalling exploitation of the native population. In 1960, the country became independent of Belgium and was known as The Republic of Congo From 1971 until 1997, the country was known as Zaire, and then became The Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Republic of Congo The area north of the Congo River had been reached by Portuguese explorers in the 1480s, but it was not until 1880 that it was formally colonised by France as French Congo and later Middle Congo. In August 1960 it was granted independence from France as The Republic of Congo. (MORE)
