Inside the distributor, basically the first component you'll see and have access to once you remove the distributor cap. It has two Philips headed screws holding it in and two wires connected to it via push on blade connectors. If you're familiar with the old points and condenser ignition it is located where you would expect to find the points in other words.

The ignition module is mounted to the side of the distributor. It a rectangular piece.
You listed this under Mercury Capri. The 1990-94 Mercury Capri had no 3.0 engine. You need to be more specific of Make, Model, & Year vehicle.
Regarding a model 1997,2 liter sonata, there is not an ignition control module as such. Ignition control comes from the ECM (ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT) through the Ignition Power Transistor (often called Igniter) and then to the Ignition coil.I do not have any information on the 1.8 or the 3.0 liter models.
The firing order for the 1991 Mercury Capri 1.6 liter, 4-cylinder non-turbo engine is 1342. Ford Motor Company produced the Capri from 1970-1977, then from 1979-1986, and again from 1991-1994.
According to one of Fords websites : For the 1.6 liter / 98 cubic inch four cylinder engine in a 1991 Mercury Capri ( the spark plug gap is .044 inch )
On the front of the engine under the two ignition coils, follow the plug wires and under the coils is the ignition module. Changed mine twice . Works better now.
The ignition module on a 1989 5.7 liter is located in the distributor. Remove the cap, then the rotor, and you will be looking at the module. The module is held in place with two screws. Real simple. Good luck, David
On the distributor
I looked in a repair manual and it said that the gap for a 1.6 l is .040
there are three coils located on top of the engine right at the fire wall, bolted to the ignition module
its mounted under the hood on the driver side fender
