Most bodies were buried in simple graves, which were marked typically by grave stelai. Stelai were similar to our modern gravestones, but they depicted a generic scene featuring characters of the "type" of the deceased, ie, a wealthy matron selecting jewelry (Hegeso's stele), a hunter with his dog (Ilisos stele), a cavalryman on his horse (Dexileos monument). Cremation was less common, and cremated bodies would be placed inside urns, which were also buried.

Generally they were cremated and their ashes held in a pot in front of a headstone in a cemetery.
