In my personal opinion as a locksmith, Schlage is a better lock. The common residential locks have 5 spaces, although some have 6. Both manufactures have each. Schlage has tighter tolerances between the cylinder and plug, and 10 depths as opposed to Kwikset with 6.
I just tried it, and it does not work. The spacing on the Kiwkset latch was not the sames as the Schlage. I am buying a Schlage latch set now.

I'd go with the big, well established names in the door hardware industry like Kwikset or Schlage. I usually trust them if they're helpful and have a lot of useful tips and advice for installation and choosing the right product. I lean towards Kwikset because they have a really good DIY section on their site (www.kwikset.com) which has tips on how to choose your door hardware and using the right tools for installation. Hope that helps!
