The Gulf of Mexico is surrounded by Florida to the east and northeast; Alabama, Mississippi and Louisana to the north; Texas in the Northwest; and the eastern coast of Mexico through the Yucatan Penninsula to the west and south.
The Gulf of Mexico is connected with other parts of the Atlantic Ocean through a wide channel to its southeast between Florida and the Yucatan Penninsula that is bisected by the island of Cuba. The part of the channel between Cuba and the Yucatan Penninsula is called the Yucatan Channel and connects the Gulf with the Caribbean Sea. The part of the channel between Cuba and Key West, Florida is called the Straits of Florida and connects the Gulf with the greater North Atlantic Ocean.
