Santa Claus is the modern name for St. Nicholas, a bishop from the fourth century. He was from a devout Christian family in Patara, a village in Greece, now part of Turkey. His parents died while he was young and he took Jesus' words about "sell what you own and give the money to the poor" which in his case, as he had a sizable inheritance, was ample to serve God assisting the needy, sick, and the suffering. He was made Bishop of Myra while still young, and buried in his Cathedral. His complete story is on the link below, along with a second link (which is part of the St. Nicholas site) for children. His feast day is 6 December. He died about the year 346 of natural causes.
