The designation of Dr. in front of a name indicates that the person has completed a PhD, ThD, in specific fields/religion, etc, or has graduated from medical school (D.O., MBBS, or M.D.) / dental school (DDS or DMD) (this includes chiropractic and naturopathic). I am not sure if acupuncturists place Dr. in front of their names, but they are called "doctor."
