- Audie Murphy (1924-1971), actor and most decorated soldier of World War II
- Lee Marvin (1924-1987) actor and decorated US Marine
- Robert Peary (1856-1920), polar explorer
- Glenn Miller (1904-1944), bandleader and Army Air Force officer
- Astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom, John Chaffee (Apollo 1 fire), Michael Smith (Challenger), Francis "Dick" Scobee (Challenger), and Charles "Pete" Conrad, 3rd man to walk on the Moon
- Abner Doubleday, Civil War General and developer of baseball
- Joe Louis (1914-1981) heavyweight champion boxer, Legion of Merit
- Medgar Evers (1925-1963), murdered civil rights activist
- Phyllis Kirk (1927-2006), actress, widow of CBS executive Warren Bush (USAAF)
- Grace Hopper (1906-1902) Commodore (USN), computer pioneer
