The Muses were the minor goddesses who inspired artists, especially poets, philosophers, and musicians. Originally there was only one, then reference of three (Melete--practice or occasion, Mneme--memory, and Aoede--song or voice). Later there was mention of nine sisters, nymphs, all daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory.
