The dead was buried by the army for which they fought. Often it was in very shallow graves and there are reports that after a rain body parts were often seen sticking out of the graves. One of the big fears of a civil war soldier was not to be identified before being buried. Dog tags weren't invented yet, so they would write their name on a piece of paper and pinned it to their clothing hoping they would be identified.
