Vulcanazation (the adding of hot sulpher to rubber to make it durable) was either developed or stumbled upon (depending on who you believe!) by Charles Goodyear in the USA. The process was developed simultaniously by Thomas Hancock in the UK - in fact, Hancock patented the process in the UK a few weeks before Goodyear patented the process in the US.

Charles Goodyear THIS WAS TOO EASY
Charles Goodyear is credited with discovering vulcanization of rubber, Benjamin Franklin with the invention of bifocal lenses.
vulcanization process of rubber and vulcanization process of rubber.
goodrich Charles Goodyear invented the process for making rubber that he named vulcanization. Goodrich then made the rubber last longer by adding carbon. Goodrich also invented synthetic rubber.
Goodyear says 1839. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulcanization#Overview_and_history
Charles Goodyear invented vulcanized rubber. John Dunlop invented the air filled tire.
Ageing is what happens over time to the material; vulcanization is a process whereby something hardens.
