The Confederate Memorial Carving, depicts three Confederate heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson and is largest high relief sculpture in the world. The carved surface is three-acres, larger than a football field. The carving of the three men soars 400 feet above the ground, measures 90 by 190 feet, and cuts 42 feet into the mountain.
It is located in Eastern GA and is the site of a monument carved into it for the Cofederate states. It is a granite dome.
In the past, Stone Mountain had been a habitual meeting place for the Ku Klux Klan. When the clan burned a cross on the summit, the fire could be seen in Atlanta, and the Klan had even planned to have the face of the mountain carved into a likeness of Robert E. Lee. This fell through, and the sculptor eventually took on the less dubious task of carving Mount Rushmore.
