George Whitefield, a prominent evangelist, along with others created an educational trust fund in 1740. But they ran out of money when erecting the building. Nine years later, Benjamin Franklin took up the cause and with others purchased the property and unfinished building. In 1751, the university opened as the "Academy and Charitable School in the Province of Pennsylvania."
