Living according to Islam, in its original form, does not mean living in the past. There is no restriction on progress and technological advancement; it is just that there are laws which never change. These laws are applicable to every time and place. It may be argued that the West, having fallen into the same old decadence of Rome and other past civilizations, is the civilization which has gone 'backwards', imitating ignorant practices of ancient people who had gone astray from God's message.
