A:

In Old Testament tradition, Abraham was the forefather of the Hebrew people, as well as of the Arabs and other Semitic peoples. He worshipped the God of the Hebrews, although the Book of Genesis does not specifically attribute monotheism to him. A later tradition is that Abraham was the first to recognise that there is only one God. His God promised him that his descendants would occupy the Promised Land - the land belonging to the Canaanites. The Book of Genesis says that he travelled from Ur in Mesopotamia to the land of the Canaanites, where he settled. He visited a pharaoh in Egypt, and told him that Sarah, his wife, was really his sister, believing that the pharaoh would kill him to have sex with Sarah if he knew they were married. He also visited a king of the Philistines, although we now know that the Philistines never arrived on the Levant until many centuries after the time attributed to Abraham. Once again, he told the king that his now elderly wife was his sister and forthe same reason.

There are many historical errors in the story of Abraham, simply because he did not really exist. Scholars find that many of the places and events associated with Abraham did not yet exist at that time, or could not have happened during the time attributed to Abraham. Even his astounding lifespan has now been shown to have been derived from numerology, using a formula based on the magic number 17.

A:According to the Old Testament, Abraham lived to the incredible age of 175 years. As with all claims that seem improbable, we should consider the evidence for that claim before accepting it unreservably. When we do so, we find an even more improbable pattern in the lifespans of the Patriarchs, which could only have been devised by numerologists, thus militating against Abraham having really lived to an unusual age:
  1. Abraham lived to 175 (5 X 5 X 7)
  2. Isaac lived to 180 (6 X 6 X 5)
  3. Jacob lived to 147 (7 X 7 X 3)
  • Each lifespan involves a perfect square (5, 6, then 7 in a numeric series),
  • the third factor also forms a series (7, 5, 3)
  • in each case the sum of the factors is 17.

It seems more likely that, if Abraham was a real, historical person, he would have lived a much shorter lifespan.

Answer:Until clear evidence is brought to the contrary, believers will rely on the Jewish tradition that Abraham indeed lived 175 years.

Abraham was chosen by God to be the man from whom a new nation would develop.

God sent Abraham to Canaan, the land that this new nation would inherit.

This new nation would be called Israel, and in time would bless the world with a Savior, Jesus Christ.

Abraham begot Isaac and Isaac begot Jacob and his twin Esau. From Jacob came twelve sons and from these twelve sons eventually came the nation of Israel.

Through out the centuries Israel has had its ups and downs and have even been cast out of their own country, but there has always been a small remnant there and in the 20th century Jews from all over the world have started to return to their homeland.

In prophecy Israel will once again become a great nation, with the Son of God, Jesus Christ, ruling from Jerusalem.
