Charles Dickens was a famous British novelist, perhaps best known for works such as "A Christmas Carol" and "Oliver Twist".

Born on 7 February 1812, Dickens was heavily influenced by his own difficult childhood. Although his early years were carefree, his father, who was a clerk in the navy pay office, was imprisoned in a debtors' prison when charles was about twelve. Charles was then forced to work 10 hours a day in Warren's boot-blacking factory in London. His wages supported himself and his family who had to live in the debtor's prison. Even after a family inheritance paid off the debt and freed them from prison, young Charles's mother insisted he keep working in the factory which was owned by a relative. This caused a great deal of resentment, much of which came out in Dickens's later writings.

At age 22, Dickens joined a London newspaper as a journalist, publishing articles in the Monthly Magazine, as well as sketches and papers for the Evening Chronicle. he was a popular writer, and in 1836 his Sketches by Boz and Pickwick Papers were published. His characters for A Christmas Carol were planned and sketched soon after this, and he completed the novella in time to be published on 19 December 1843. Thousands of copies were sold before Christmas Eve that year. Other popular novels followed, such as Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, David Copperfield, The Pickwick Papers, Bleak House, The Old Curiosity Shop, Nicholas Nickleby and A Tale of Two Cities.

Dickens became known for his themes of social injustice and poverty, and these are rife throughout his novels, many of which have been adapted for the stage and film.
