Isaiah Holland is awesome
The Old Testament Book of Isaiah is now known to have had at least two, and probably three authors. The first author, now known as First Isaiah or I Isaiah, signed the book in verse 1 as Isaiah, son of Amoz, and said that he wrote concerning the reigns of Kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. The second author was anonymous but is now known as Second Isaiah or II Isaiah, and wrote more than a hundred years later, during the Babylonian Exile. Some scholars believe that Second Isaiah lived until the early years after the Return from the Babylonian Exile, while others say that the post-Exilic material was written by a third, anonymous author known as Third (III) Isaiah.
Isaiah (meaning 'Salvation of YHWH') was a prophet from around 778BCE to the '14th year of Hezekiah's reign'(about 732BCE/Isaiah 36:1+2). He was the son of the prophet Amoz, and spoke God's messages primarily to Judah during the reigns of King Uzziah, King Jotham, King Ahaz and King Hezekiah(Isaiah 1:1), but also prophesied against Isreal during the reigns of King Pekah and King Hoshea. He started his prophesying after Hosea and before Micah, but continued during the same time period(Hosea 1:1/Micah 1:1/2Chronicles 28:9) telling about the fall of Israel to Assyria, and Jerusalem to Babylon(Isaiah 39:6+7), and the ultimate restoration(Isaiah 10:20-23) of God's people, and judgement on Babylon, at the hand of Cyrus of Persia(Isaiah 45:1+2), when he liberated a 'remnant' from Babylon in 537 BCE.
Isaiah was one of the four major prophets in the Old Testament. His prophecies include much about the coming Messiah. For this reason his work is sometimes called 'the fifth Gospel.'
