The first American woman soldier was Deborah Sampson of Massachusetts. She enlisted as a Continental Army soldier under the name of "Robert Shurtlief". She served for three years in the Revolutionary War and was wounded twice; she cut a musket ball out of her own thigh so no doctor would find out she was a woman. Finally, at the end of the hostilities her secret was discovered-even so, George Washington gave her an honorable discharge. She later lectured on her experiences and became a champion of women's rights.
She was shot in the leg no more than a week after she joined and she got it ouy by her self with a knife so that nobody would find out about her secret. But then about 3 or 4 weeks later she was shot 2 tims in the leg and 1 time in the chest and they sent her to the doctor. there he found out that she was a girl but he cept it a secret just between them.about 1 year of her being in the war they found out about her being a girl. But thankfully they let her live they just took her out of the US Military.
