∙ 12y agoThomas Dewey, the Governor of New York. Dewey had previously contested Roosevelt in the 1944 election. Dewey only narrowly won his party's nomination - the conservative Republicans didn't like him that much - but was widely slated to defeat Truman in 1948. However, Truman unexpectedly defeated Dewey with a margin of 5% of the vote.
