The Greek Phidias, circa 432 BC, is the sculptor of the statue of Zeus at Olympia. Most certainly the largest bronze figure of the time, the statue was seated and still some 12 meters (39 feet) tall. No copies or replicas exist and the circumstances of its destruction are still debated.
The sculptor who carved graceful statues of the human form was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. He designed the Statue of Liberty.

There are many quotes by Michelangelo where he insists he is a sculptor and not a painter. Marble was definitely his preferred medium. An interesting aspect about the paintings in The Sistine Chapel is the sculptural quality of the images. This does not really show in photographs, but when seen in person one has the feeling that the figures are bursting out of the ceiling and wall.

The Greek sculptor Polykleito's statue, The Spear Bearer, emphasizes the theory of the ideal mathematical proportions of the human body. Polykleito is considered one of the most important sculptors of Classical antiquity.

The ancient Greeks believed their gods to be spiritual, just as the Abrahamic God is. Zeus was the sky god and chief god in the ancient Greek pantheon, and was spiritual like the others. And all the gods could take on human form when they needed to intervene in human affairs. Of course, the Romans carved statues, or idols, to help them pray to the gods.
