The Bolsheviks (Большеви́к), roughly translated as, majorityites, and known also for a time as the Bolshevists, were founded by Vladimir Lenin in 1903, as a faction of the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP). They participated in the social revolution of 1905.This revolt was characterized by wide spread strikes, mutinies, and significant, but isolated, violence. However, lacking unifying leadership it failed to bring about sufficient change to satisfy the energized masses.

The Bolsheviks began as a vocal minority but over the course of the next 6 - 9 years, they grew larger. They were not a factor at all in the February Revolution of 1917 that caused Tsar Nicholas II to abdicate the throne. Lenin was in Switzerland at the time and didn't even know it had happened.

The Bolsheviks started the October Revolution against Alexander Kerensky's Provisional Government, deposed it and took control of the country. The Bolsheviks were not the ones who revolted against the Tsar.

In March 1918, Lenin and the Bolsheviks adopted the name Communist Party in place of the Bolshevik Party, because Lenin had outlawed all other political parties even the socialist and communist ones, so it was not only a majority party, but the only Party.

The Bolsheviks were a group of people in the soviets who thought that the Russian Revolution needed to be violent for it to be effective. The name Bolsheviks was changed to Communists after they had taken over and turned Russia into a Communist State.

Hope this helps - K
