The Boxers were members of a secret group who were officially named the "Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists." The name of the Boxers was a nickname given by the Europeans. The Boxers hated anyone who was a foreigner, especially missionaries. But even their own were not exempt. The Boxers had a deep hatred for the Chinese who had been converted to Christianity. The attacks and killings by this group finally caused European governments to send in troops and make demands that this treatment be stopped and reparations made.
The "Boxers" were a Chinese society, that along with the Chinese government in 1900 wanted to rid China of the imperialist foreigners that had taken advantage of China in trade and by their use of better weapons & technology. China had the wealth the imperialists wanted, but China was not a strong military nation.
A group of the imperialist nations formed a semi-united military force that suppressed the Boxers. These nations now wanted war reparations from China. The US urged China to pay them but not by giving them any Chinese territory. The US received some of this money and for what it was worth, gave half of it back to advance education in China and to supply Chinese students with funds to attend colleges in the USA.
In summary, the Boxer Rebellion was just another effort by China to rid themselves of foreign Imperialism. It sadly failed & Japan, European powers & the US took advantage of China's weakness.
The Boxers were a secret, intensely nationalistic Chinese society who tried to oust all foreigners from their country.
Other than China, presumably. The eight countries which allied against the Boxers were Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan, the US, Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary.
