How did the varangians influence Russia's development?

In the 700s and 800s, the Vikings steered their long ships out of Scandinavia. These expert sailors were as much at home on Russian rivers as on the stormy Atlantic. The Vikings, called Varangians by later Russians, worked their way south along the rivers, trading with and collecting tribute from the Slavs. They also conducted a thriving trade with Constantinople.Located at the heart of this vital trade network was the city of Kiev. In time, it would become the center of the first Russian state. Within a few generations, the Varangians who had settled among the Slavs were absorbed into the local culture. Viking names like Helga and Waldemar became the Slavic names Olga and Vladimir.

What was the first city in Russia?

The oldest Slavic city was Veliky Novgorod (renamed to just "Novgorod" in 1999) The city was mentioned for the first time in the "Sofia First Chronicle". It says that around the year of 859 the Varangians already used the city as a trading post which means that it is possible that the city was founded even before 859 A.D. The Varangians named the city Holmgard.

What relationships did the Slavs have to the Vikings?

In Slavic languages such as Russian the Vikings are known as the Varyags (Varangians in English). The Vikings plied many of the riverine systems of what is today Ukraine, Russia and Belarus establishing trade, and later a political kingdom over the ancient Slavs. This period also created a common ancestral descent between the tribes due to political dominion.

The first Russian state was called?

It depends what you mean by state, but if you mean it in the sense of an organized kingdom, that would be the Kievan Rus, in the late 9th century CE (approximately 880 AD). However, there were earlier Rus pre-states, which include the old Novgorod principality (also known as Holmgård, after the name the Varangians i.e. Vikings gave to the place) part of a larger association of cities and principalities known as the Russian Khaganate, in the early 9th century AD.

What country used to own Kiev?

Multiple countries and empires used to have control over Kiev. The city was first control by the Varangians (a form of Eastern European vikings) in the Middle Ages. It was then captured by the Mongol Empire around 1240 and completely destroyed. Over the next few centuries the city would be controlled by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Poland, and then finally the Russian Empire. It remained a part of the Russia (later renamed the Soviet Union) until 1991 upon the Ukraine's independence. Today, the city remains as the Ukraine's capital.

Where was the former region of Varangia located?

I think you have to go backwards from Varangians( the inhabitants thereof). They were raider-trader warriors from present day Sweden who established a tribe of Vikings in Novgorod and Kiev and called themselves the 'Rus'. 'Var' in Old Norse means oath. They swore an oath to one another to see their commercial adventure to a profitable end and then stayed in the region, assimulating with Slavic tribes and ruling them to some degree as the KievianRus, principality that one day would become known as the nation of Russia.Varangia would have to be the land of their origin, Vikings from Scandinavia, predominately Sweden.
