A Saarloos Wolfhound is not necessarily great to have as a pet because they have so much wolf characteristics in them. Wolves are generally shy towards people and so is this breed. Also, they do not respond well to obedience training and do not really like to work. They are not suitable to being guard dogs because usually they will not attack a trespasser and, like wolves, they naturally do not like to bark. Due to their nature, it is best to have a Saarloos Wolfhound as an outdoor dog.
All in all, they are shy, generally hard to train and may not be great guard dogs, which to some people, make them unsuitable pets.
