Why are deserts unfit to live in?

Who says deserts are unfit for living? I live in the Chihuahuan Desert of Texas and love it. Millions of people in the United States alone live in deserts. Look at the cities of Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, and Las Vegas for example. While much of the country is having problems with bitter cold, snow and ice in the winter, we poor desert-loving souls just smile.
Deserts can be quite unforgiving!

Think about the overall conditions - very hot much of the year (often over 100 degrees during the day) and very dry (very little relative humidity) and in part due to this, there is very little to support crop growth (no significant food sources) and very little water availability which is vital to life. In addition, job opportunities are not often found in desert environments. Often, people may live in a desert type environment (think parts of Arizona) but that area is often close to a non-desert environment and has sustainable resources such as food and water that can supply those living in the area.

Millions and millions of people who live in deserts around the world would have to disagree with you. Look at cities such as Cairo in Egypt or Las Vegas, Phoenix or Tucson un the United States and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and Torreob in Mexico. As long as there is a source of water, people will not find the desert as unfit. In fact, most love it because of the mild winters, sunny skies and few rainy days.
