it depends on the person theiself to acttuly answer that qusetion but not always it matters on how that person feels about what sex they like to date more male or female Maybe because their relationship with guys just never seem to work out to there advantage, either they were always cheating on them, or they get more turned on with a girl and with a guy they are with, it all depends on the person and their experiences with the opposite sex in order to determine that. It's usually fear, but not always. Many girls find men of their own age-group and even quite a bit older very immature indeed. This may be a factor. Because there is not one type of bisexual man or woman. They may be attracted and have prior involvement with people of both genders, but tend to be involved sexually or relationship wise with people of one gender over the other. It's a matter of what you are in the mood for if. Sometimes you can be in the mood for chicken and then get tired of it and want to eat steak.

Try to educate them on what bisexuality actually is. Tell them "I am not a lesbian. Lesbians will only date girls. I'm bisexual. That means that I don't care about gender. I care about the person inside."
